Couples who are living together outside of marriage do not, contrary to what many believe, have the same rights as a couple who are married.
Increasingly, people are choosing to live together outside of marriage, but, more often than not, are not taking adequate precautions to safeguard themselves in the event of relationship breakdown or death. For example, in the unfortunate event of one partner passing, the other may not be able to stay in the joint home. They might not be able to receive the deceaseds pension, or even look after the children.
A cohabitation agreement will help you by clearly documenting which of you owns what, and what you are entitled to. It is of particular importance if when buying a property together, or where children are concerned.
So, if you are planning on living together, or you already do and do not have a cohabitation agreement, it is in you & your partners’ best interests to speak to our Family Lawyers and rectify this situation immediately, to safeguard you both.
If you find yourself in the unfortunate position whereby your partnership has already broken down, or your partner passed, and no agreement was in place, do not despair. Call to make an appointment with a solicitor who can advise you on your legal rights.
